Stacking Sorting Crates, Set of Three

Three open ash crates that stack into one column, for sorting recycling by a back door or in a utility room: paper in one, glass in another, cans in the third. Each has a cut-out hand hold at both ends, so the full crate goes straight out to the collection bin.

Stacked, you reach the lower crates by lifting the top one off; there are no lowered fronts. They have no liners and the wood is oiled, not sealed, so rinse bottles and cans before they go in. If you would rather keep recycling behind a door, the double tilt-out cabinet does that job.

Specification

• Each crate approx. 40 W × 30 D × 22 H cm (15½ × 12 × 8½ in), about 20 L; stacked height about 66 cm (26 in); sizes are approximate
• Solid ash end panels with cut-out hand holds; sides of two wide solid ash slats with a gap between
• Set of three identical crates; they also stand side by side
• Weight about 2.2 kg (5 lb) each; arrive assembled
• Natural: clear matt oil; the ash stays pale honey-coloured and mellows slowly over the years
• Black: water-based black stain under the same matt oil; the grain shows through as darker texture, and knocks on edges can show paler wood
• Made for us by a furniture workshop to our drawings; dispatched from Hong Kong within 3 to 5 business days
• No pedal, no sensor, no motor and no batteries

Care. Dust with a dry cloth and wipe marks with a cloth wrung out in warm water and a drop of mild soap, then dry the wood straight away. Do not soak it, and keep bleach, solvent-based kitchen sprays and steam cleaners off it. Wipe spills on the top or lid before they sit. Re-oil once or twice a year with a hardwax or furniture oil; the black finish takes the same oil. Lift the inner bucket or pail out to wash it in the sink. More on Care & Materials.
