Care & Materials

What it is made of, how big it is, and how to look after it

Every piece is made from the same ash and finished the same way. Only the size, the shape and the finish change.

The wood

  • Solid ash for the frames, tops, door edges, drawer front, lids, slats and crate ends.
  • Ash-veneered plywood for the cabinet doors, sides, divider and backs, which keeps them flat and stable.
  • Small pieces are joined with finger-jointed corners; cabinets bolt together with steel bolts and a hex key.
  • Door stays are dark grey powder-coated steel. There are no handles: each door and drawer has a finger-pull slot.
  • Buckets and pails are grey polypropylene, and lift out to be washed.

The finishes

Two ash boards side by side, natural oiled and black stained
Natural on the left, Black on the right.
  • Natural: clear matt oil. The ash stays pale honey-coloured and mellows slowly over the years.
  • Black: a water-based black stain under the same matt oil. The grain shows through as a darker texture, and a hard knock on an edge can show paler wood underneath.

Both finishes are oiled, not sealed or lacquered. Ash grain and colour vary from board to board, so no two pieces are identical.

Sizes

Width × depth × height. Sizes are approximate and can vary by up to 1 cm.

Looking after it

  1. Dust with a dry cloth. Wipe marks with a cloth wrung out in warm water and a drop of mild soap, then dry the wood straight away.
  2. Do not soak it. Keep bleach, solvent-based kitchen sprays and steam cleaners off the wood.
  3. Use a liner in every bucket and pail, and wipe any spill on a top or lid before it sits.
  4. Lift the buckets and pails out to wash them in the sink with washing-up liquid.
  5. Once or twice a year, rub in a thin coat of hardwax oil or furniture oil and buff off the excess. The black finish takes the same oil.
