Finish

A slim ash cabinet for one 30 litre bucket. The whole front is a door hinged at the bottom: pull the finger slot at the top and it tips forward until a steel stay stops it, so the bucket is at the right angle to drop things in. Close it and it is a plain wooden cabinet with a flat top for a fruit bowl or a stack of post.

There is no pedal and no soft-close; you open it by hand, and the door drops forward under its own weight onto the stay. It needs about 30 cm (12 in) clear in front to open fully. The wood is oiled, not sealed, so always use a bin liner and do not put wet waste straight into the bucket. It arrives flat-packed and takes about 30 minutes to put together with the hex key in the box.

Specification

  • Approx. 38 W × 36 D × 82 H cm (15 × 14 × 32 in); sizes are approximate and can vary by up to 1 cm
  • Holds one 30 L (about 8 US gal) grey polypropylene bucket with a rim for the liner, included
  • Solid ash frame, top and door edges; ash-veneered plywood door, sides and back
  • Door hinged at the bottom, limited by a dark grey steel folding stay; finger-pull slot, no handle
  • Top carries up to about 10 kg (22 lb)
  • Weight about 12 kg (26 lb); arrives flat-packed with bolts and a hex key
  • Natural: clear matt oil; the ash stays pale honey-coloured and mellows slowly over the years
  • Black: water-based black stain under the same matt oil; the grain shows through as darker texture, and knocks on edges can show paler wood
  • Made for us by a furniture workshop to our drawings; dispatched from Hong Kong within 3 to 5 business days
  • No pedal, no sensor, no motor and no batteries

Care. Dust with a dry cloth and wipe marks with a cloth wrung out in warm water and a drop of mild soap, then dry the wood straight away. Do not soak it, and keep bleach, solvent-based kitchen sprays and steam cleaners off it. Wipe spills on the top or lid before they sit. Re-oil once or twice a year with a hardwax or furniture oil; the black finish takes the same oil. Lift the inner bucket or pail out to wash it in the sink. More on Care & Materials.
